Research Projects Experience

Project: Spanish in the Media (TV, Radio and Press) directed by the UNAM University, Mexico
Aug. 2001 to May 2003

Directed (in Puerto Rico) by Dr. Maria Vaquero, Head of the Linguistics Graduate Program of the University of Puerto Rico. The project focused on conversation analysis (from TV and radio programs) and written discourse analysis (from newspapers and general literature). It was titled International Broadcasting of the Spanish in Radio, TV and Newspapers (Difusión Internacional del Español por Radio, Televisión y Prensa, DIES-RTP) and was directed by the UNAM University (Mexico) in collaboration with other universities in Latin America and Europe. The most important duties included making transcriptions of the TV and radio programs, processing the data following the program´s set of markup symbols, analyzing and tagging each word of the corpus, checking and validating coding of linguistic data. The validation was completed based on the semantic and morphological criteria. Once it was coded the data was analyzed and presented in statistics to demonstrate different information as the frequency of local lexicon vs. international variety, frequency and syntactical usage of adjectives and adverbs, frequent errors in conversation analysis, usage of metaphoric language, syntactic parsing, foreign words in discourse, vocabulary diversification, etc. A data base was created for the graduate students of the Linguistics Graduate Program of the University of Puerto Rico. Publications and talks have been presented based on the results of the project.
